Normandy Landings Remembered on June 6th

Allied Invasion Legacy to be Honored

On June 6, 2024, the world will commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the historic Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II. The landings, which began on Tuesday, June 6, 1944, marked a major turning point in the conflict and paved the way for the liberation of Western Europe.

The invasion involved over 156,000 American, British, and Canadian troops storming 50 miles of Normandy's heavily fortified beaches. The seaborne operation, known as Operation Neptune, was the largest of its kind in history, involving nearly 5,000 landing and assault craft, 289 escort vessels, and 277 minesweepers.

The Normandy landings laid the foundation for the Allied victory in Europe. They opened a second front against the Nazis, diverting German forces away from the Eastern Front and hastening the end of the war.
